Open WebUI

One self-hosted interface for every LLM — local models, your own API keys, your data on your terms.

Overview

Open WebUI

Open WebUI is a feature-rich, self-hosted chat UI for large language models. It talks to local engines like Ollama and llama.cpp and to any OpenAI-compatible API — so your team can use frontier cloud models and on-prem models from the same workspace, with one set of prompts, tools and guardrails.

The default "AI strategy" today is pasting your roadmap, contracts and customer data into a US consumer product whose terms can change overnight. Open WebUI flips that: you keep the chat UX your team is used to, but routing, logging and data retention are decisions you make. Sensitive prompts go to a local model on your hardware; the rest goes to whichever provider you choose, through a key you control.

What you get

Capabilities

Any model, one UI

Ollama, llama.cpp, OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Gemini and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint — switch models per chat or per workspace.

RAG over your documents

Upload files or wire up a knowledge base and chat with your own data. Citations, chunking and re-ranking included.

Tools, functions and pipelines

Add Python tools and custom pipelines, expose internal APIs to the model, build assistants that actually do work — not just chat.

Workspaces, roles and audit

Multi-user accounts, role-based access, per-model permissions and an audit trail — the basics enterprise needs and consumer chatbots ignore.

Free & open source

Why this beats the proprietary default

The same advantages apply across every product on this page — open source is a category-level upgrade, not a niche preference.

Auditable source code

Anyone can read, review and audit the code. Security researchers, your own engineers, or an independent auditor — no black boxes, no "trust us".

Your data, your infrastructure

Runs on hardware you control, in a jurisdiction you choose. No silent data exports to a US hyperscaler, no "product improvement" sampling of your content.

Predictable cost, no per-seat tax

Pay for hosting and operations, not for every user, mailbox or feature flag. Adding the tenth or hundredth user doesn't multiply your bill.

Exit is built in

Open standards, open formats, no vendor lock-in. If you ever want to move — to another host, another team, in-house — the data and the software are yours to take.
